Updates

[September 12, 2026]

Hi everyone,

We have some exciting progress to share - we’ve received our pre-production samples of the separator!

This is a major milestone for us. The separator is by far the most complex and highest-risk component of Root, housing the electronics and core mechanical systems that make everything work.

With these samples in hand, we now have confirmation on the electronics, software, and separator assembly, which gives us a lot of confidence in the remaining steps toward production.

An important design review

As we’ve mentioned before, we’re taking extra steps with Root to make sure we’re not just getting it into production, but building something that will last.

As part of that effort, we brought in a third-party engineering team to independently review the complete design before finalizing everything for production.

Their review identified several areas where relatively small design changes could improve assembly and the long-term durability of the product. None were critical issues, but these improvements could extend the life of Root. So, we made the difficult call to take the extra time and make those improvements.

That work is now wrapping up, and we’re back on track from where we left off.

Updated shipping timeline

Because of the additional engineering work, we’re now expecting to fulfill orders throughout October and November.

We know this is later than we had hoped, and we really appreciate everyone’s patience. When fulfillment begins, orders will ship in the order they were originally placed, meaning our earliest backers will continue to be the very first to receive Root.

What’s left?

The bin is the final major component we’re working through. It’s considerably simpler than the separator, and we don’t currently anticipate the same level of complexity there.

We’ll share photos as soon as we receive the bin samples and can show you the complete system together.

After that, the next major step is production and fulfillment, which is measured in weeks rather than months.

We’re getting very close, and we’re excited to finally be able to show you Root coming together.

Hi everyone,

We wanted to share another progress update as we continue moving Root toward production.

Mold making has officially begun

We’re excited to share that fabrication of the production molds has officially started!

This is one of the biggest milestones in the manufacturing process. These molds are what will be used to produce the production parts that make up every Root unit, so a great deal of care goes into making sure everything is just right.

At the same time, we’re in the process of reviewing production prototypes to verify that each component meets our expectations before we move further into production.

Where are the photos?

We know everyone’s excited to see photos, and trust us, we can’t wait to share them either!

Right now, we’re seeing the project come together piece by piece, with individual components being completed one at a time. Once we have a completed assembly, we can share photos.

As soon as we have those, you’ll be the first to see them.

What’s next?

Over the coming weeks, we’ll continue reviewing the prototype components and making sure everything meets our quality standards before moving into full production.

As always, thank you for your patience and support. Every step brings us closer to getting Root into your kitchens, and we couldn’t be more excited.

Hi everyone,

We wanted to share a quick progress update.

Production prototypes ordered

We're happy to report that we've officially placed the order for our production prototypes.

These prototypes are being built to validate our mold designs and ensure everything fits, functions, and assembles exactly as intended before we move into full production. While this step adds time upfront, it significantly reduces risk later and helps us deliver the quality we're aiming for.

We're excited to see these come together and will be sharing photos as soon as we have them in hand.

Progress continues

While we wait for the production prototypes to arrive, work on Root is continuing across several other areas of the project.

We're actively progressing the electronics production and refining the firmware that powers the system, ensuring everything is ready to integrate once the final units are shipping.

We're also excited to share that the Root mobile app is now complete and has been deployed to the Apple App Store. Android support is still in development and will be available soon, but for those of you who would like an early look at the app experience, you can download it here.

Thank you again for your patience and support. We'll continue sharing updates as development progresses and we're looking forward to sharing prototype photos when they arrive!

Hi everyone,

We’ve got a solid progress update to share.

Separator component complete

We recently received feedback from our manufacturing partners, and it’s been very positive.

The separator component, which is the most complex and critical part of Root, is now complete from a design for manufacturing standpoint and ready for sample production.

This is a big milestone, as the separator is the core of the system and houses the main mechanics and electronics.

What’s next

We’re now wrapping up design for manufacturing on the bin, which is more straightforward and should move quickly.

From there, we’ll:

- build and approve samples

- move into mold building

- begin producing the first units

We’ll share photos as soon as we start receiving prototypes.

Updated timeline

Because of the extra refinement work in this phase, we’re now targeting July for the first batch of shipments, instead of May.

We know delays aren’t ideal, but this step ensures the quality and reliability we want for Root.

As Kickstarter backers, you’ll still be the very first to receive units.

Thanks again for sticking with us, we’re getting close.

Hi everyone,

We wanted to share a progress update, and also acknowledge that it’s been a little while since our last one.

The reason for the gap is simple: we’ve been fully heads down working through the manufacturing setup to bring Root to life. This stage involves a lot of detailed engineering work behind the scenes, and we’ve been putting in long hours to make sure everything is done right.

Where things stand

In our last update, we mentioned that we were approaching the end of tooling analysis and preparing to begin building the molds.

Since then, we’ve continued working closely with our manufacturing partners, and during this process, a few key components required additional refinement to ensure they are fully manufacturable and reliable at scale.

We’ve now completed those updates and are currently waiting on final feedback from our manufacturers before moving into tooling.

A small but meaningful improvement

One positive outcome from this deeper analysis is that we identified a way to reduce the power consumption of the unit.

As a result, the wall adapter will now be smaller and lower power than originally designed, which is a nice added benefit, especially for those planning to run Root on battery setups.

What’s next

Once we receive final confirmation, we’ll begin building the molds.

We’ll be starting with the separator component, which is the most complex part of the system and houses the core mechanics and electronics.

Alongside production tooling, we’ll also be creating prototype versions, and we’re excited to share photos of those with you as they come together.

Thank you again for your continued support and patience, we’re making steady progress and looking forward to sharing more soon.

Hi everyone!

Just wanted to share another quick progress update and say thank you again for all the support and patience as we bring Root to life.

In our last update, we mentioned that we were in the tooling analysis phase. We’re happy to report that we’ve made strong progress here, and we’re currently on track to complete tooling analysis by February 9th.

Tooling analysis is the stage where we closely review every single part of Root with our manufacturing partner to confirm that it can be produced reliably and consistently at scale. It’s also where we fine-tune details like fit, tolerances, materials, and long-term durability, so what comes off the production line matches exactly what we designed and tested.

What’s next after February 9th?

Once tooling analysis is finished, we move into the next phase: building the tools (plastic injection molds).

This stage is generally faster, but it’s also higher risk because this is where everything becomes much more permanent and locked-in. Or set in stone… steel, in this case.

Because of that, we’ll be taking our time to make sure every step is carefully crafted and reviewed.

As the molds are built, we’ll begin seeing the first samples from each mold for approvals, and we’ll be sure to share photos as soon as we have them.

More updates to come soon!

Hi everyone!

Since our last update, we’ve been hard at work on tooling analysis, which involves closely reviewing every part of Root with our manufacturing partner to ensure it can be produced reliably, consistently, and at scale. This step helps us confirm materials, tolerances, and manufacturing methods so that what comes off the production line matches exactly what we designed and tested.

This process takes time, but it’s an important one. It’s where small refinements happen that improve durability, fit, and long-term performance. We’re making steady progress through this phase and everything remains on track, with shipping still projected to begin in May.

Once tooling analysis is completed, the next step is building the molds and moving into one of the most exciting phases of the project: producing and testing the first components off the production line. This is where Root really starts to come to life in its final, production-ready form.

As always, thank you so much for your continued support and patience. We’re making real progress behind the scenes and can’t wait to share more as we move into these next milestones.

Hi everyone,

We want to start by saying a huge thank you. This campaign has been an incredible experience for us and we are so grateful for every single one of you who chose to support Root. Your belief in what we’re building means a lot, and seeing this community come together has given us validation and momentum to keep moving forward with confidence.

This is the first of many updates you’ll receive from us. We’ll be sharing progress on production, timelines, shipping, and anything else you should know as we bring Root to life.

To kick things off with the first progress update, we are placing the deposit with our manufacturing partner to begin production setup. We have a long-standing relationship with them, and we’ll now begin the detailed process of tooling analysis, part verification, and approvals. This stage will take a few months as each component goes through testing and refinement to make sure quality is where it needs to be.

We are genuinely excited for you to have your Root units in your kitchens soon. Thank you again for being here at the very beginning with us.

More updates to come.
